Frequently Asked Questions
What precautions are you taking for Covid-19?
BIG QUESTION: We have implemented several Covid precautions. We added to the HVAC system a virus/chemical air filter that works throughout the building. We also have a standalone air filter on the first floor to add extra protection. We use virus cleaning supplies and wipe down doorknobs often. Our bathroom light/fan and soap dispensers are motion-detected, providing a no-touch option.
Do I have to wear a mask to get my hair cut?
No, at this time we are not wearing masks. However, we ask that if you are even the slightest bit off or have been sick or around someone that is sick, please help us stay healthy by wearing a mask. If you don’t have one, we’d be happy to provide you with one.
Should I cancel if I’m sick?
Yes, we appreciate your cooperation in keeping the staff and clients healthy by assessing your own health before you come in.
How often should I get my hair trimmed?
This is a big and often asked question. We recommend a haircut for short hair every 4-6 weeks; for medium length hair, 4-10 weeks; and for long hair, 8-12 weeks. Keeping your hair freshly trimmed will allow your hair to always look shiny and will also keep the ends from breaking, allowing for your hair to feel like it’s growing longer.
Does anyone at Illume cut curly hair?
Absolutely! All of us have experience in cutting curls and each of us has our own approach. We are more than happy to consult, hear your concerns, and talk through any questions before actually doing any cutting or shaping of your curls.
Do Stylists at Illume cut hair dry?
Yes. We are more than happy to do a dry cut. If you prefer a dry cut, just let us know, and we will walk you through our dry cut experience. Please come clean and dry for your appointment. If you would like your hair styled after your dry cut is finished, please let us know.
Do Illume stylists cut men and women’s hair?
Yes! We are happy to provide haircuts to any person with any style regardless of gender. There is a price difference of $10 if we blow-dry your style.
If I want a new style and bring in a picture, can you cut my hair like the picture?
We all see pictures of hair that we love and hope we can have. So the answer is yes, we love pictures – bring as many as you like. Our goal is to help you get as close to the style you want and choose. Be assured that if the picture you bring in is not the best for your face shape or hair texture, we will be honest and helpful in finding your best possible look.
How long does it take to get my hair colored?
Right now, we are booking on a 45-minute booking system, so a root color and haircut will take approximately 2 1/2 hours. If you are in a time crunch, let us know, and we will do our best to get you moving through the process quicker.
How long do foil highlights take?
These times are approximate: mini foil 30 min; partial foil 45-60 min; full highlight 90 min. These times are application times; they do not include color melts, overlays, treatments, haircuts, or any other services.
Can I come with wet hair?
Absolutely! The best is clean dry hair but we accept all hair in any form.
Do I need to have "dirty" hair for an updo?
It is best to arrive for an updo with freshly washed and thoroughly dry hair.
How do I tip?
We’d love cash or venmo! At this time we are not putting it on credit cards.
Who do I tip?
Feel free to tip whomever you feel deserves some extra love.
How much do I tip?
Tipping is optional. We are just grateful for your patronage and hope that we do an excellent job, every time. If you feel the desire to award us for our effort and expertise, a range from 10-20% of the service, is really appreciated.
What product brand does Illume Hair sell?

Does Illume Hair accept credit cards?
Yes, we accept all major credit cards.
Does Illume Hair sell gift cards?
Yes, we do. The easiest way to purchase one is online, but we can also help you purchase at the salon.
Is there a cancellation policy?
This is a tricky question. We want our clients to feel free to call us and cancel when you are sick, even if it’s at the last minute. If you are sick, PLEASE cancel your appointment. Now the tricky part. When a client cancels last minute, the goals set by each stylist and staff member are affected. If you must cancel your appointment, we ask that you cancel at least 24 hours before your appointment time. Failure to be respectful of this policy may result in a payment of 50% of the canceled service before you may schedule another service at Illume Hair. We appreciate your respect, honesty, and cooperation.
Can you color eyebrows to match any hair color?
We can match an eyebrow color to your hair color. Just let us know before we mix your hair color, and we will accommodate your request.
Is anyone at Illume a Color Specialist?
Yes, Miriam is. She’s been certified since 2015.

Schedule a consultation for pricing and timing – we’d love to see you!
Does Illume do perms?

Is there a quiet place to sit if I just want to relax?
Yes, there are rockers on the front porch. If it is warm enough for you to be outside, you are welcome to grab a cup of tea and go sit on the front porch. It’s so nice! During the cooler months, we have seating in the kitchen, reception, and a room upstairs to just chill in while processing.
If I don’t want to talk to the stylist do I have to, or is there a way to let her know I just want to relax?
If you don’t want to talk during your service, that is totally fine. We would love to know if you would just like to come in and enjoy the service without having to engage in “small talk.” Just send a text with your confirmation text the day before, or let us know when you check in. It does not offend us in the least! Surprisingly, we love to just soak in the quiet ourselves.
